While college is a time for personal development and resume building, sometimes you just need something to consistently look forward to that helps you forget about the stress of college life.
I’ve chewed through my fair share of pencils during my college days, but if I had joined one of these clubs, maybe not so many pencils would have lost their lives.
Here my list of the most relaxing student clubs you can join, lead, or create at your college!
Crafter’s Corner
Whether you’re saving fun craft ideas on Pinterest, Youtube, or Instagram, or simply just want to learn to knit, joining a crafting club will get you access to an abundance supplies and a fun social setting.
Things you could do in a Crafter’s Corners Club:
- Weekly knitters circles
- Knit and gab about all the campus gossip!
- Snacks and watercolor painting sessions
- Maybe not the smartest combination but definitely the most delicious
- Craft Supply Swaps
- You’ve just finished your mood board and now you’re left with a half bottle of pink glitter you don’t know what to do with. Trade that glitter in for fabric marker to spruce up some white vans.
- DIY Workshops
- Go in with an open mind and leave with a macrame house plant holder.
- BYOP (Bring Your Own Project)
- Work on your Pinterest projects with around other people who share your passion for crafting. You just might get inspired by someone else project.
- Art on the Grass
- Pull out your blankets and yoga mats on the quad to enjoy a beautiful day and create! Of course, art supplies, music, good vibes are always included.
- Bring crafts to the local hospital or nursing home
- You swear that crafting can warm a lonely heart, comfort others with your happy presence and a box full of crafts.
Board Gamers Club
There was once a time I believed that the only game boards that existed were the classics (i.e. monopoly, twister, checkers, battleship). Luckily, I found that I was oh-so-wrong when my work-study co-workers insisted on playing their massive collections of board games during lunch.
There are literally hundreds of different games on the market with new ones coming out all the time. My love of board games even transferred to my life after college where I now spend every Thursday night with my friend group playing new board games.
It’s easy to get paralyzed by all the choices. If you don’t know where to start, I suggest you check out the game review blog, Shut Up and Sit Down, for funny board game walkthroughs and opinions.
Things to do in a Game Boarders Club:
- Weekly game nights
- Brighten up a weeknight with new games or old favorites and of course … snacks!
- Gameboard swaps
- A gameboard that used to bring you so much joy has gotten tired. That doesn’t mean that it can’t make someone else happy. Swap that gameboard out for a new one and you have yourself a classic win-win situation.
- Wholesale Game Board Purchases
- Sites like Cool Stuff Inc. and Miniature Market have unique game boards at cheap prices but require a $100 purchase minimal to get free shipping. If quite a few members want to buy board games, completing bulk orders can save members lots of money.
Nerf Battle Club
If there is one lesson that you can take away from college… it’s never to take life too seriously. One moment you could be sitting outside your class after an exam, stress googling the answers to questions you only slightly remember to make sure you got them right, but then only a moment later, you’re shooting a NERF Rival Nemesis MXVII-10K while dogging foam darts behind a pallet wood wall.
We never truly outgrow our child-like desire to play. Not to say that there isn’t plenty to learn from running a Nerf Club. You learn how to be proficient in recruiting, event planning, strategizing, teamwork, and course design.
Things to do in a Nerf Club:
- Test out new Nerf Equipment
- Plan games, nerf wars, and social get-together
- Create strategies with your team for the next event
- Design course equipment such as barriers to hide behind
Garden Club
I’ve just recently been bitten by that gardening bug and it’s fair to say it’s become an obsession. Growing plants from seeds is oddly satisfying. I often find myself showing pots with sprouts to my friends and family looking like that meme of an otter holding its baby while saying “I made dis”.
Reading books about gardening and looking through there beautiful photos of florals and vegetation can also provide a nice break from thinking about responsibilities. If I found this passion in college, I’d think I would have love gushing over hydrangeas with others while discussing how to adjust there pH.
Things to Do in a Gardening Club:
- Create a community garden on campus
- Explore and Learn about Your Campus’s Green House
- Attend classes discussing a variety of gardening subjects
- Learn on how to create a countertop garden that can fit in your small apartment kitchen or learn about aquaponics.
- Attend a DIY Workshop
- Make self-watering plant containers out of old soda bottles or biodegradable egg carton mini-greenhouses.
- Visit your cities’ botanical garden for a fun weekend event
- While there your club can debate on the proper pronunciations of scientific plant names.
- Help greenify your community or city
- By volunteering your time, you can help to create green spaces that can be enjoyed by all.
Best Foot Forward
Maybe you always wanted to learn to skateboard in middle school but your parents didn’t allow you to partake in “dangerous” activities. Maybe you’ve been skateboarding since you could walk and now looking for a community and place to let you skate freely.
There’s no room to stress about school when you’re trying to accomplish the perfect ollie. Rather you’re into skateboarding, rollerblading, or scooting you should be with people who encourage your hobby no matter your skill level.
Things to do in a Best Foot Forward Club:
- Have weekly get-together at a local park
- Attend classes on tricks
- Share go-pro footage and photos through an online community
- Scout out new locations or local events for skaters, skateboarder, or scooter enthusiasts.
